Bio
Recruited from Edithvale-Aspendale, Mick Rea was an imposing 196cm ruckman and forward who served a two-year apprenticeship in the reserves before breaking into Melbourne's senior side in 1978. Despite his size and potential, his opportunities at VFL level dried up following the arrival of Carl Ditterich as playing coach and Stewart Gull as a fellow tall recruit, leading to his delisting without a win in his three senior games. Rea subsequently moved to Western Australia, where he transformed from a fringe VFL ruckman into a powerhouse WAFL full-forward. After a brief stint with West Perth, he became a legend at the Perth Football Club, using his massive 105kg frame to dominate contests and bust open packs. He topped the Demons' goalkicking six times and won two Bernie Naylor Medals as the league's leading scorer, highlighted by a 100-goal season in 1985 that cemented his status as a prolific state-league spearhead.
