Bio
A powerful all-round athlete, Mike Woods arrived at Melbourne via Old Melburnians and the Royal Australian Navy, where he had served on the HMAS Nizam and won a heavyweight boxing title during World War II. He made an immediate impact at VFL level, claiming the Demons' Best First Year Player award in 1949 as a versatile ruckman and defender. His athleticism was such that he earned Victorian state selection in just his second season, representing the Big V at the 1950 Brisbane Carnival. Despite establishing himself as a key figure in the side, his career was cut short when he retired midway through the 1953 season to study at the London School of Economics, where he subsequently played rugby union for Harlequins.
