Recruited from the Coburg Juniors, Monty Horan was a diminutive utility who featured for Fitzroy during the upheaval of the Second World War years. Standing just 174cm and weighing 68kg, he was a lightly framed player who typically operated on the wing or half-back flank where he could utilise his mobility away from the heaviest traffic. His career is best defined by his involvement in the club's historic 1944 premiership campaign; Horan played 10 senior matches that season, making a solid contribution to the side's minor premiership run. Despite his service during the home-and-away rounds, he was unable to force his way into the final lineup for the Grand Final victory over Richmond, missing out on a premiership medallion by the narrowest of margins. He remained with the Gorillas for another two seasons, eventually departing in 1946 with 21 senior games and a single goal to his name.
