A Scotch College product who featured in the school's 1898 premiership side, Morley Kidgell was recruited to the VFL from Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula. He was brought into the South Melbourne lineup midway through the 1904 season, making his debut in a gritty win over Geelong at the Lake Oval. Standing 177cm, Kidgell provided a physical presence for South during a five-game stint but failed to secure a permanent place in the side, eventually returning to Dromana at the end of the year. His brief league career proved to be a footnote to a successful professional life in the transport industry, where he later served as president of the Master Carriers’ Association of Victoria.
