Bio
Arriving at Victoria Park from East Coburg, Murray Murrell served his apprenticeship in the seconds, notably featuring in the 1944 reserves Grand Final loss to Fitzroy before earning his senior call-up the following year. A key defender standing 187cm—tall for the era—he was handed the full-back role for his debut against St Kilda in Round 7, 1945. His VFL career was ultimately limited to just two senior appearances during that transitional post-war season as he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the Pies' defensive setup. While his time at the top level was fleeting, Murrell later established himself as a genuine star in regional football, winning Best and Fairest awards in the Tallangatta and Upper Murray leagues and captain-coaching Corryong to a Grand Final in the early 1950s.
