Bio
Recruited from Swan Districts, Murray Rance entered the VFL as a mature-age defender with Footscray, where he quickly adapted to the elite level with his disciplined checking and strength in one-on-one contests. After starting the 1988 season at the Western Oval, he returned to his home state midway through the year to join the West Coast Eagles, providing immediate experience to the club's developing backline. A reliable full-back, Rance was appointed West Coast captain for the 1989 season, leading the side during a pivotal transition period prior to the club's dominant era in the early 1990s. While he retired in 1991, his footballing legacy was later enhanced by the career of his son, Richmond premiership star Alex Rance.
