Bio
Recruited from Stony Creek in South Gippsland, Murray "Sugar" Zeuschner was an athletic tall who arrived at the Western Oval with a background in competitive high jump and a teaching degree. After an unsuccessful trial with Carlton, he found his footing at Footscray in 1962, using his 191cm frame and impressive vertical leap to operate as a mobile ruckman who frequently drifted back to plug holes in defence. He wore the number one guernsey for the entirety of his tenure and became a durable fixture in the side, most notably playing every game of the 1965 season while averaging high possession numbers for a big man. Zeuschner’s VFL career concluded in 1967 when, sensing that the arrival of teenage prodigy Gary Dempsey would severely limit his opportunities in the ruck, he accepted a lucrative offer to transfer to VFA club Sandringham to play alongside his brother Barry.
