Bio
Recruited from the border town of Apsley in the Wimmera, Murrie Batt was a tall ruck-forward who found himself competing for a spot during an era of enviable big-man depth at Victoria Park. Standing 193cm, he possessed the size to play as a key position forward or relieve in the ruck, debuting in 1975 and immediately showing an eye for the goals. Despite maintaining a better than one-goal-per-game average in the seniors, Batt struggled to cement a permanent place in a side that boasted established stars like Len Thompson and emerging giant Peter Moore. He ultimately became a dominant force in the lower grades, featuring in the Magpies' 1976 reserves premiership and winning the reserves Best and Fairest in 1977. Unable to break past the club's elite talls, he eventually departed for the VFA, where he continued his goal-kicking form with Preston.
