Bio
Drafted by Hawthorn with pick 24 in the 2000 National Draft, Nathan Lonie entered the league alongside his identical twin brother Ryan, who was selected by Collingwood. A lightly built outside midfielder with a piercing left-foot kick, Lonie was best known for his ability to carry the ball and finish on the run from beyond the fifty-metre arc. While his kicking skills were highly valued early in his career, he often faced external criticism regarding his physical presence and contested ball-winning ability, eventually falling out of favour as Alastair Clarkson began reshaping the Hawks' list with a harder edge.
Seeking greater opportunities, Lonie was traded to Port Adelaide ahead of the 2006 season. He enjoyed a consistent debut year with the Power and featured in the club's 2007 Grand Final loss to Geelong, playing primarily as a running half-forward or wingman. However, his form tapered off the following season as the club looked to regenerate its list, and he was delisted at the conclusion of 2008 having just cleared the 100-game milestone.
