Recruited from the Eastern Ranges with pick 59 in the 2008 National Draft, Nathan O'Keefe was a tall forward initially viewed as a long-term prospect for North Melbourne. Standing 193cm but lightly built, he spent his first season developing in the VFL before his progress was briefly halted by glandular fever during the 2010 pre-season. O'Keefe recovered to show strong form for Werribee, earning a senior debut in Round 10 against the Western Bulldogs. He played just one more game—a nail-biting win over the Brisbane Lions—and kicked his solitary career goal before being delisted at the end of the season. The decision to cut a project player after only two years surprised some observers, but O'Keefe subsequently forged a successful career in local football. He returned to his home club Seville, where he became a premiership captain and a decorated club legend.
