Bio
Recruited from the Bendigo Pioneers with pick 20 in the 1997 National Draft, Nathan Thompson established himself as a physically imposing key forward and relief ruckman for Hawthorn. He became a focal point of the Hawks' attack during their competitive period in the early 2000s, utilising his strong contested marking and accurate set-shot kicking to consistently impact the scoreboard. However, his time at Glenferrie Oval concluded under significant personal circumstances; in 2004, Thompson publicly revealed his battle with clinical depression, a courageous admission that helped shift the cultural conversation regarding mental health in elite sport.
Seeking a fresh environment to aid his recovery, Thompson was traded to North Melbourne ahead of the 2005 season. He delivered immediate value at Arden Street, winning the club's goal-kicking award in 2006 and providing a crucial structural target inside 50. His career faced a major setback when an ACL injury during the 2007 pre-season forced him to miss the entire year, but he returned for a final campaign in 2008 to assist the Kangaroos in reaching the finals. Thompson retired as a respected key position player who delivered consistent performances across two clubs while leaving a lasting legacy off the field through his advocacy.
