Bio
Recruited from Footscray Juniors after originally hailing from St Arnaud, Ned Alley was a defensive-minded small man whose VFL career was brief but served as a prelude to a legendary tenure in the VFA. He enjoyed a consistent debut season with South Melbourne in 1902, featuring in 15 matches, but lost his place in the side the following year and managed just one senior appearance before departing the club. Alley subsequently crossed to Williamstown, where he became a definitive figure in the club's history, playing 160 games and captaining the Seagulls to their inaugural premiership in 1907. His contribution to the game extended to the war front, where he was selected to play in the famous Pioneer Exhibition Game in London during World War I, securing a legacy that far outstripped his raw statistics at Lake Oval.
