Bio
Arriving at Essendon from North Melbourne's VFA outfit, Ned McSweeney was a rugged, contested player who operated effectively as both a follower and a defender. Although his four-season tenure at Windy Hill resulted in a modest game tally, his uncompromising style was highly rated by contemporaries, earning him selection for the VFL representative side against a combined Country team in 1927. After leaving the League to captain-coach Warrnambool and play for Brunswick, McSweeney faced his greatest challenge during World War II, where he survived a harrowing stint as a prisoner of war in Singapore. He returned to Australia with his health severely compromised but eventually reconnected with the Bombers, serving the club as a trainer until the mid-1950s.
