Bio
Recruited from St Joseph's, Neville Broderick served a lengthy five-year apprenticeship in the Collingwood reserves before finally breaking into the senior side. Although a skilled, dual-sided kick with a powerful frame, he found himself stuck behind legendary centremen like Bob Rose and Bill Twomey at Victoria Park, often forced to play as a flanker or utility. Seeking greater opportunity in his preferred position, he crossed to Fitzroy in 1952 and immediately established himself as a premier on-baller. A thick-set contested ball winner who thrived in muddy conditions, Broderick won the Maroons' Best and Fairest in his first season at the club. After three consistent years with Fitzroy, he left the VFL at age 28 to accept a lucrative captain-coaching role with Wynyard in Tasmania.
