Recruited from local club Drysdale, Neville Bruns progressed through the Geelong under-19s to become a staple of the senior side for 15 seasons. A pacy wingman and rover with exceptional endurance, Bruns provided vital outside run and possessed a sharp goal sense that made him a dangerous midfield option. His career is frequently cited in relation to a notorious incident in Round 12, 1985, where he suffered a broken jaw behind play from Hawthorn's Leigh Matthews, resulting in Matthews facing criminal charges and deregistration.

Despite the severity of the injury, Bruns returned to play his best football in the late 1980s, evolving into a senior leader as the Cats re-emerged as a powerhouse under Malcolm Blight. He played on the wing during the physically bruising 1989 Grand Final against Hawthorn, collecting 18 disposals in the famous loss. By the time he retired in 1992, Bruns had cemented his legacy as a loyal one-club player and a Geelong life member, ranking among the club's most durable contributors during a transitional era at Kardinia Park.
