Recruited from West Preston, Neville Crowe emerged as the heart and soul of the Richmond Football Club during a prolonged period of on-field struggle. A strong, vigorous ruckman who relied on physical presence and tireless work ethic rather than pure skill, he carried the Tigers' midfield throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, winning three Best and Fairest awards and captaining the side from 1963 to 1966. Crowe played a pivotal role in the cultural transformation under Tom Hafey that turned the club into a powerhouse, yet his playing career ended in heartbreak. In the 1967 Second Semi-Final, he was reported for striking Carlton's John Nicholls—an incident where Nicholls appeared to stage the contact—resulting in a suspension that forced Crowe to watch from the stands as his teammates broke a 24-year premiership drought.

While denied a premiership medallion, Crowe's contribution to Richmond extended well beyond his playing days. He returned to serve as president during the club's dire financial crisis in 1990, becoming the face of the "Save Our Skins" campaign that rescued the Tigers from insolvency and a threatened merger. Through his leadership during this turbulent period, Crowe effectively saved the club's existence, earning him status as a Richmond Immortal and ensuring his legacy was defined not just by the Grand Final he missed, but by the future he secured for the club.
