Bio
Recruited from Essendon High School, "Nifty" Neville Fields was a dashing left-footed centreman who established himself as one of the Bombers' brightest young stars in the early 1970s. Renowned for his magnificent kicking skills and ability to break lines, he quickly became a key playmaker at Windy Hill. His breakout form was rewarded in 1972 when he won the Crichton Medal as Essendon's Best and Fairest and earned selection for Victoria, cementing his status as a premier midfielder of the competition during that period.
Despite his individual brilliance, Fields is perhaps best remembered by football historians for his involvement in one of the most significant trades in VFL/AFL history. After struggling for consistency in the late 70s, he was cleared to South Melbourne in 1978 in a deal that saw Terry Daniher—and subsequently his brothers—move to Essendon. Fields gave the Swans solid service over three seasons, playing 60 games, before returning to Windy Hill in 1981 to finish his career where it began, adding depth as a veteran before hanging up the boots in 1982.
