Bio
A robust ruck-rover recruited from Rutherglen in the Ovens and Murray League, Neville Huggins battled through one of the toughest eras in VFL history. His career began briefly at Fitzroy in 1929, but a dispute with the committee ended his time there after only four appearances. After a season out of the league, he joined North Melbourne in 1931, where he became a standout performer in a struggling side, enduring a personal 22-game losing streak before finally tasting victory. Huggins—who worked as a policeman throughout his playing days—eventually rose to captain North Melbourne during the 1935 season. He left the VFL the following year to become captain-coach of Williamstown, where he cemented his legacy as a star of the game, winning the VFA Medal and reportedly becoming the highest-paid coach in the country.
