Bio
Recruited from Malvern Grammar, Neville Linney was a precociously talented utility whose VFL career was defined by a meteoric rise and a premature exit. He burst onto the scene in 1953 as a "boy wonder," earning selection for Victoria in the Adelaide Carnival during his debut season—a rare distinction that highlighted his immediate impact as a high-quality half-back flanker. Despite this brilliant start, Linney’s time at St Kilda was turbulent, dogged by inconsistency and clashes with administration that saw him briefly defect to Golden Point in the Ballarat League during 1955 before returning to the Saints. A strong-bodied player capable of dominant performances in attack, he showcased his immense potential one last time in his final VFL appearance, booting five goals in a win over Collingwood at just 24 years of age. Unable to find stability at the elite level, he eventually drifted to country football with Yallourn, remembered largely as a gifted player who left the game far too soon.
