Bio
Recruited from VFA side Brunswick as a teenager, Newton Chandler’s arrival at Princes Park was delayed by the onset of the Great War, forcing him to wait until 1919 to make his senior debut as a mature-age recruit. A lightly built but durable winger and flanker, he became a fixture in the Blues' lineup during the early 1920s, notably holding down a spot on the wing in the narrow 1921 Grand Final loss to Richmond. While his playing days concluded after 69 games, Chandler’s dedication to the club spanned generations, seeing him serve lengthy tenures as secretary, treasurer, and vice-president well after hanging up the boots. His lifelong commitment was immortalised by his longevity; passing away at 103, he is remembered fondly as "The Grand Old Man of Carlton."
