Bio
A highly touted junior who captained South Australia’s under-18 side, Nicholas Smith arrived at Melbourne as a first-round draftee (pick 15) from Norwood in 2002. Standing 198cm, the ruckman and key position prospect struggled to translate his potential into senior consistency, managing just three games in his debut season before disappearing into the VFL for three years due to a combination of form issues and severe wrist and knee injuries. While he became a dual premiership player for affiliate club Sandringham, he remained outside the senior frame until a shock recall for the 2006 Semi Final against Fremantle to replace an injured Mark Jamar. It was Smith’s first AFL game since 2003 and ultimately his last; he had minimal impact in the loss and was delisted at the season’s end, closing the book on a brief career bookended by high draft hopes and a solitary, unexpected final.
