Bio
Recruited from St Bernard’s in the VAFA, Nick Mitchell arrived at Fitzroy with a deep personal connection to the Lions through his father, Gus, who served as the club’s Chairman of Selectors during the turbulent mid-1990s. A neat left-footed utility capable of rotating through the midfield or playing off a flank, Mitchell managed nine senior appearances between 1994 and 1995 as the cash-strapped club fought for survival. While he could not cement a long-term spot in the AFL side, his football journey flourished at the local level, where he became a premiership captain and best-and-fairest winner at St Bernard’s. Mitchell later solidified his status among the Royboys faithful by returning to coach the Fitzroy Football Club in the VAFA, becoming the first former AFL Lion to lead the amateur club and serving as a vital bridge between Fitzroy’s national league heritage and its modern community identity.
