Bio
Recruited from South Fremantle, Nicky Winmar arrived at St Kilda in 1987 and quickly established himself as one of the most skillful players of his generation. Operating primarily as a wingman or half-forward, Winmar possessed a rare combination of pace, agility, and elite foot skills that allowed him to break lines and damage opposition sides. He became the first Indigenous player to reach the 200-game milestone in VFL/AFL history and claimed two Trevor Barker Awards as St Kilda's best and fairest, along with dual All-Australian selection. While his on-field brilliance was a constant, he is perhaps most enduringly remembered for his defiant stand against racial abuse at Victoria Park in 1993, where he raised his jumper to point at his skin—a moment that remains a significant cultural turning point in Australian football history.
After 12 seasons at Moorabbin, Winmar's time at St Kilda came to an end following the 1998 season when he was moved on to the Western Bulldogs. He managed one season at the Whitten Oval, playing a utility role before retiring from the top level. His contribution to the game was later formally recognised with induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame and selection on the wing in St Kilda's Team of the Century and the Indigenous Team of the Century.
