Bio
A versatile sportsman recruited from Wesley College and the Collegians amateur side, Noel Ellis joined Melbourne mid-season in 1940 after the amateur competition suspended operations due to the war. The Demons secured his signature after a permit dispute with South Melbourne, effectively arguing that his boarding school residence tied him to their zone rather than his family home in Red Cliffs. A talented defender who also excelled in cricket and athletics, Ellis featured as a half-back flanker in the opening rounds of 1941 before his career was halted by military service. He rose to the rank of Sergeant in the 106th Anti-Tank Regiment but was tragically killed in a firearms accident at a Queensland army camp just days before his 21st birthday. Ellis remains honoured as one of the club's fallen soldiers of the Second World War.
