Recruited to Hawthorn during the final stages of the Second World War, Noel Hickey was a mid-sized utility who battled to cement a regular spot in the senior side. He made his debut late in the 1945 season against St Kilda at Glenferrie Oval, appearing at a time when the club was grappling with significant list turnover. Standing 178cm, Hickey was typically deployed as a flanker or pocket option, but he found consistency difficult to come by in a struggling lineup. He enjoyed his best run in 1946 with four senior appearances but failed to retain his place the following year, departing the VFL scene after the 1947 season with six games and a solitary goal to his name.
