Bio
Recruited from Ulverstone on Tasmania’s north-west coast, Noel Leary arrived at Melbourne in 1970 as a high-profile recruit but ultimately endured a VFL career defined by cruel injury setbacks. A tough and dogged defender capable of locking down dangerous forwards, Leary showed immediate promise in his debut season before his momentum was repeatedly stalled by serious physical blows, including a broken leg in a 1971 practice match and a dislocated shoulder the following pre-season. Although he proved his quality by winning the Demons' Reserves Best and Fairest award in 1973, he was unable to secure a permanent run in the seniors and returned to his home state at the end of the year. Leary subsequently carved out a legendary status in the TANFL, captain-coaching Clarence to multiple premierships and earning induction into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
