Recruited from Sunbury during the club’s golden era, Noel Long arrived at the Western Oval as a precociously talented teenage forward who had already tasted premiership success in the bush. He showed promise as a target in attack for the Bulldogs, booting 12 goals in his 12 senior appearances, but his VFL career was cut short by a decision he later admitted regretting. Newly married and enticed by a lucrative offer to play for Kyneton, Long departed the league after just two seasons to return to country football. While his time at the top level was brief, he forged a formidable legacy in the Ovens and Murray League with Yarrawonga, where he moved after answering an advertisement seeking a butcher who could play football. He went on to play nearly 200 games for the Pigeons, establishing himself as one of the region's premier centre half-forwards and earning induction into the O&M Hall of Fame.
