Recruited from Croydon, Noel Zunneberg was a steadfast key defender who manned the centre half-back post for Fitzroy during the late 1960s. Renowned for his strong overhead marking and disciplined checking, he was an often unheralded but vital cog in the Lions' backline, capable of shutting down dangerous opposition forwards. His individual quality was highlighted during a standout 1970 season, where he polled a remarkable 12 Brownlow Medal votes—a significant tally for a defender in that era. His time in the VFL ended abruptly early in the 1972 season when he left Fitzroy to cross to the VFA, signing with Preston. Zunneberg flourished in his second act in the Association, eventually captaining the Bullants and winning a club Best and Fairest to cement a legacy as a premier defender across two competitions.
