Stats
Bio
Recruited from Northcote CYMS, Norm Baker established himself as a reliable defensive unit for Essendon during the late 1930s. Operating primarily in the back pocket and on the half-back flank, he was a disciplined player who focused entirely on checking opposition forwards, a role underscored by the fact that he played 55 senior games without registering a single goal. He became a fixture of the Bombers' defence immediately upon his arrival in 1937, missing very few games over a five-season stretch. Baker's promising VFL career was brought to a premature halt at the end of the 1941 season when he enlisted for military service during World War II, effectively ending his time at the top level at just 24 years of age.
