Recruited from Yarraville in the metropolitan junior leagues, Norm Bradford was a gifted all-round athlete who broke into the South Melbourne lineup during the tumultuous 1915 season. He quickly displayed an aptitude for the highest level, booting nine goals in his seven senior games and appearing set for a bright future at the Lakeside Oval. His career was abruptly cut short by the demands of the Great War, with Bradford playing his final match against Fitzroy in July before enlisting in the AIF just days later. Serving as a corporal with the 23rd Battalion on the Western Front, he was tragically killed in action at Pozières in August 1916 while leading a bombing section. One of many league footballers to fall during the conflict, his brief but promising sporting life is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
