Norm Brown emerged as a beacon of consistency for Fitzroy during a largely difficult era for the club in the 1960s. Recruited from Benedictine College, he established himself as a versatile key position player capable of holding down a post in defence or swinging forward to provide a target, evidenced by a respectable goal tally for a player largely tasked with stopping the opposition. Brown was renowned for his strong marking and reliability under pressure, traits that saw him awarded back-to-back Mitchell Medals as the club's best and fairest in 1966 and 1967.

His standing at the Brunswick Street Oval was further solidified when he was appointed captain in 1970, leading a young side that was fighting to move up the ladder. Beyond his club duties, Brown earned state selection for Victoria, validating his quality against the league's elite. He remained a loyal one-club player throughout his career, retiring in 1973 as one of the most respected figures to wear the maroon and blue during that decade.
