Recruited from the Wangaratta Rovers in the Ovens and Murray League, Norm Bussell arrived at Hawthorn in 1968 and immediately bolstered the club's defensive stocks. A traditional full-back known for his strength and uncompromising close-checking style, Bussell was tasked with containing the powerful full-forwards of the era, rarely venturing forward himself as evidenced by his career tally of just two goals. His reliability in the last line of defence provided essential stability for the Hawks as they transitioned into a powerhouse of the competition under coach John Kennedy Snr.

Bussell's career highlight came in 1971, where he played a crucial role as the full-back in Hawthorn's premiership victory over St Kilda. He remained a consistent fixture in the senior side throughout his six-season tenure, racking up 113 games and earning a reputation for durability. Despite his consistency, his time at the VFL level concluded after the 1973 season, but he departed as a premiership player and a vital defensive component of Hawthorn's first golden era.
