Bio
Recruited from Macleod-Rosanna in the Diamond Valley, Norm Dare was a lightly framed wingman and utility who overcame a lack of physical bulk to carve out a respectable VFL career. Dubbed the "knockout kid" early in his tenure due to his tendency to come off second best in heavy collisions, he relied on his football smarts and accumulation skills to hold his spot, notably gathering 33 disposals in just his seventh senior game. While he gave a decade of service to the Lions, his most notorious exploit occurred during a brief intermission in the SANFL with West Torrens; realizing his team had too many players on the field during a match against West Adelaide, he famously jumped the perimeter fence and hid amongst the crowd to save his side from a head count penalty. Dare returned to Fitzroy for a final two-game cameo in 1977 before transitioning into coaching, where he would eventually leave an indelible mark as a pioneer of Queensland football and senior coach of the Brisbane Bears.
