Bio
A product of the tough Port Melbourne docks, Norm Fletcher was a tall utility who struggled to cement a regular spot during the "Foreign Legion" era at South Melbourne. Born and raised in the Borough, he managed just 14 games over three seasons at the Lake Oval before dropping out of the league to play for his local VFA side, Port Melbourne. Like many of his generation, Fletcher's football prime was interrupted by the Second World War, during which he saw active service as a Leading Seaman in the Royal Australian Navy. He made a brief return to the VFL in 1943, crossing to Hawthorn for a two-game cameo as the Mayblooms scrambled to fill their list during the wartime player shortage, but he did not remain at the top level post-war.
