Hailing from Ararat, Norm Lugg was a Great War veteran who enlisted at just 17 and served with the 21st Battalion and Engineers before returning to Australia in early 1919. He wasted no time swapping his military fatigues for a football jumper, impressively breaking into a South Melbourne side that was coming off a premiership victory the previous season. A solid, heavy-set utility who lacked sheer pace but made up for it with elite dual-sided foot skills, Lugg became a regular for the Southerners and featured in their historic 1919 demolition of St Kilda, a match that set a longstanding VFL record for the highest winning margin. However, the physical toll of his war service eventually caught up with him; hampered by lingering injuries, he was granted a clearance to Fitzroy in 1921. He managed one final season with the Maroons before leaving the VFL to captain-coach Frankston and later Yeoman in Tasmania.
