Teams

Hailing from Finley in the New South Wales Riverina, Norm Mason was a tall utility who joined South Melbourne as a 23-year-old recruit during the 1938 season. Standing 185cm, he offered the Bloods a robust physical presence in the key posts or ruck contests, possessing significant height for the era. Mason broke into the senior side for his debut against Hawthorn at the Lake Oval in Round 5, but after the team suffered a home defeat, he found it difficult to cement a permanent place in the lineup. He earned a recall three weeks later for a clash with Fitzroy, yet after a heavy loss, he was omitted and his brief VFL career concluded without a goal. Following his short stint at the elite level, Mason went on to serve in the Australian Army during the Second World War.
