Bio
Standing a massive 191cm, Norm McCleary was a giant of his time who was plucked from the small Mallee town of Watchupga to play for Essendon. Born in Talbot, the key position prospect was recruited to Windy Hill and given his chance late in the 1933 season, making his debut against Carlton in Round 15 where he immediately made his presence felt with two goals. He backed up that performance with another major against Hawthorn three weeks later, showing glimpses of his potential as a contested marking target and backup ruckman. Despite his ability to hit the scoreboard, McCleary's VFL career was fleeting, limited to just those two senior appearances before he departed the League, later serving his country in the Australian Army during World War II.
