Bio
Recruited from Strathmerton in the Murray Football League, Norm Smith arrived at Hawthorn carrying the most famous name in the game, though he was unrelated to the legendary Melbourne coach. A prolific ball-winner who had already claimed a country league best and fairest, he broke into the Hawks' senior lineup as a ruck-rover for five games in 1967. However, his promising VFL stint was effectively ended by National Service, which pulled him away from elite level football just as he was finding his feet. Following his service, Smith returned to country football and forged a brilliant local career, winning back-to-back Morrison Medals in the Goulburn Valley Football League to cement his standing as one of the finest bush footballers of his era.
