Bio
Recruited from West Torrens in the SANFL, Ossie Bertram was a prominent member of South Melbourne’s celebrated "Foreign Legion" of the 1930s. Lured to Victoria by the promise of steady employment in president Archie Crofts’ grocery empire during the Great Depression, the South Australian rover quickly established himself as a goal-kicking threat at his new club. He famously tasted success in his debut season, playing as a forward pocket in the Swans' 1933 Premiership victory over Richmond and featuring in the losing Grand Final side the following year. A clever small who could find space in a crowded forward line, Bertram crossed to St Kilda in 1935 where he spent his final two seasons, but he remains best defined by his contribution to South Melbourne's golden era.
