Bio
Born in St Arnaud, Samuel "Otto" Buck was a foundation player for the Blues who bridged the gap between the club's VFA era and the newly formed VFL. After representing Carlton in the 1896 VFA season, the half-forward secured his place in football history by taking the field in the league’s inaugural match against Fitzroy at the Brunswick Street Oval in Round 1, 1897. While his top-flight career was brief, lasting just three games in that historic opening month, Buck remains notable as one of the pioneers selected to wear the Navy Blue guernsey in the competition's very first fixture before drifting out of the senior side.
