Bio
Born in the Victorian goldfields town of Allendale, Paddy McDonald was a railway worker recruited to Essendon from Yarraville Juniors. A diminutive utility standing just 174cm, he managed a brief senior career during the erratic final stages of the First World War and the immediate post-war period. While he booted three goals in his nine appearances, McDonald’s tenure is best remembered for a singular historical quirk involving his younger brother, Frank McDonald. Paddy’s final VFL match—a Round 10 clash against Richmond in 1919—doubled as Frank’s senior debut, seeing the siblings line up in the same side for the first and only time. Following that game, Paddy departed the league, effectively passing the baton to Frank, who went on to become a dual leading goalkicker for the club in the early 1920s.
