Recruited from Port Melbourne, Paddy Mills established himself as a dashing half-back for Melbourne during the early 1900s. Known for his speed and ability to read the play across the defensive line, he was a consistent performer for the Redlegs over seven seasons. Despite being a regular fixture in the VFL, Mills chose to leave the league in 1910 to return to the Association, where he took on the role of captain-coach at his original club, notably steering Port Melbourne to the 1911 VFA premiership.

His success in the lower tier prompted a return to the top flight, with Carlton securing his services for the 1912 season. Brought in to add hardened experience to the Blues' backline, Mills slotted immediately into the side and featured in the club's semi-final campaign during his debut year at Princes Park. He played one final season with Carlton before retiring, finishing his career as a highly respected defender who proved his quality across two distinct stints in the VFL competition.
