Bio
Recruited from East Fremantle with pick 7 in the 2005 National Draft, Paddy Ryder developed into one of the most athletically gifted ruckmen of his generation. While he began his career at Essendon filling key position posts in defence and attack, he eventually settled as a premier tap ruckman renowned for his spectacular vertical leap and ability to direct hit-outs to advantage. His departure from the Bombers in late 2014 was heavily publicised, as he invoked a clause related to the club's supplements program to facilitate a trade to Port Adelaide.
Ryder's tenure at Alberton was interrupted by a mandatory season-long suspension in 2016 alongside his former Essendon teammates, but he rebounded emphatically to win the John Cahill Medal and earn All-Australian honours in 2017. Known for his capacity to drift forward and impact the scoreboard, he joined St Kilda ahead of the 2020 season, forming a formidable tandem with Rowan Marshall that became crucial to the Saints' midfield structure. Ryder retired in 2022 after 281 games, remembered for his resilience and his standing as one of the game's most effective centre-bounce technicians.
