Recruited from Thornbury CYMS, Pat Fricker was a gifted all-round athlete who arrived at Collingwood with a reputation as a champion schoolboy sprinter and high jumper. A tall, smooth-moving midfielder known for his polished disposal and versatility, he frequently served as an understudy to champion centreman Marcus Whelan, a role that restricted his specific opportunities during the club's powerhouse era of the mid-1930s. He eventually established himself as a regular senior contributor, playing on the wing in the 1938 Grand Final loss to Carlton and filling various roles from full-back to the forward flank. Fricker’s loyalty and leadership were rewarded during the Second World War when he was appointed club captain in 1944, tasked with guiding a young and inexperienced list. His tenure as skipper was unfortunately brief, as an Army transfer away from Melbourne mid-season brought a premature end to his VFL career.
