A classy export from the Apple Isle, Pat Hartnett was a stylish half-forward whose St Kilda career was split into two distinct chapters. Originally recruited from North Launceston, he played a single season at the Junction Oval in 1930 before returning to Tasmania, where he dominated for Cananore and tied for the 1932 William Leitch Medal (awarded retrospectively). Lured back to the VFL in 1934, Hartnett flourished in his second stint, utilizing a booming drop kick and strong aerial ability to become a key playmaker for the Saints. His form warranted selection for Victoria in 1935, where he booted six goals against South Australia—a state-of-origin feat later matched by fellow Tasmanian Peter Hudson. Hartnett departed St Kilda to join VFA club Brighton, where he capped off a distinguished career by winning the 1939 Recorder Cup, securing a rare double of league best-and-fairest awards in two different states.
