Bio
Born in the rural Victorian town of Cobden, Pat Scanlan’s brief VFL career is defined almost entirely by his first afternoon of senior football. Entering a Melbourne side during the competition's infancy in 1898, he made an immediate impact on debut against St Kilda at the MCG, booting two goals in a low-scoring affair where his team only managed five majors in total. Despite this sharp start as a forward option, he was unable to replicate that scoring form, failing to trouble the goal umpire in his subsequent five league appearances. Scanlan played out the remainder of the 1898 season and added a solitary game in 1899 before slipping out of the top level, leaving behind a statistical record heavily weighted toward his maiden performance.
