Bio
Arriving at the Lake Oval from Rockbank, Pat Trethowan followed the path blazed by his older brother, ruckman John Trethowan. While he shared his sibling's height at 188cm, Pat was a lighter-framed utility who primarily operated as a defender or relief follower rather than a contest-heavy ruck. He made his debut in 1962, coinciding with John’s final year at the club, and quickly established himself as a competitive member of the South Melbourne lineup. Trethowan managed 30 games over three seasons, often tasked with stopping opposition forwards or filling gaps in the structure, before leaving the VFL at the end of 1964. He subsequently returned to country football in the Ballarat league, where he became known as a physically imposing figure who used his top-level experience to command the ground.
