Bio
Breaking into Hawthorn's powerhouse lineup of the 1980s was a formidable task, but Paul Abbott carved out a significant niche as a reliable tall utility during the club's golden era. Capable of playing as a key forward or providing relief in the ruck, Abbott was known for his strong overhead marking and ability to create contests, serving as the perfect foil for legendary forwards Jason Dunstall and Dermott Brereton. His structural importance was rewarded with premiership glory, as he played decisive roles in the Hawks' 1986 and 1988 flag victories, cementing his place in the club's history.
By the early 1990s, with Hawthorn looking to regenerate its list, Abbott found regular selection harder to come by. He extended his career by crossing to Fitzroy for the 1992 season, bringing valuable premiership experience to a struggling Lions outfit. While his stint at Fitzroy was brief, spanning just two seasons before his retirement, Abbott remains best remembered as a selfless and effective contributor to one of the most dominant teams in VFL/AFL history.
