Teams

Recruited from Xavier College, Paul Briglia made a memorable entrance to VFL football in the opening round of the 1959 season. Selected as one of five debutants for South Melbourne to face the reigning premiers Collingwood, he played a key role in spoiling the Magpies' flag unfurling celebrations at Victoria Park. Standing 188cm, Briglia was a mobile tall who alternated between the forward line and the ruck, often using his height to advantage in marking contests. He came onto the ground in that famous debut win to replace an injured teammate, immediately impacting the contest in the ruck and booting a crucial goal. Despite showing promise as a goal-kicking follower with 14 majors in his 16 appearances, his time at the Lake Oval was brief, concluding his VFL tenure after just three seasons.
