Bio
Recruited from De La Salle, Paul Cooper was a steady defender who bridged the gap between Hawthorn's golden era and the rebuilding phase of the mid-1990s. He made an immediate impact in his debut 1990 season, holding his place in the senior side for an elimination final, but suffered the heartbreak of missing out on the club's 1991 Premiership triumph after managing just seven appearances that year. As experienced stars departed, Cooper cemented his spot in the backline, enjoying his most prolific campaign in 1993 where he became a consistent ball-winner across half-back. He played 81 games for the Hawks before departing at the end of 1996, later establishing a meaningful post-career legacy as the founder of the Papunya Foundation, which connects grassroots Melbourne football clubs with remote Indigenous communities.
